Female Condom Review

Jenna: As a sexual health educator I so wanted to love the female condom. A few months ago, I attended an eight hour training on the female condom and was very excited to try them out. A few years ago, I tried out the original FC. When I learned the FC2 had some improvements I was curious to try them out.

The FC2 is much quieter (many complained that they sounded like a plastic bag) and the outer ring is a bit bigger than the FC1 – all great for improving ease of use and effectiveness. Inserting is an interesting task, making sure that it is inserted straight without the little plastic ring inside twisting. I found inserting the female condom far enough back toward the cervix tricky. I used the female condom twice, hoping that practice made perfect, but who am I kidding knowing I’m not going to learn "Dueling Banjos" on my banjo in two separate practice sessions. BUT I digress, comparing female condom use to banjo playing. Lube is number one, when a partner is inserting themselves inside the female condom. If there isn’t enough, it becomes a bit baggy and sticks to your partner’s penis.

But guess what? When I wore the female condom and was on top of my partner, my clit got a little extra attention from the outside ring and in all positions my g-spot was very happy with the extra pressure from the internal plastic ring. Fun!

Final answer: a great option for women and couples as a contraceptive and protector of STIs. Personally, I would only feel comfortable using the female condom with someone I trusted to insert themselves carefully inside the condom and one who was tested.

Dave: I know…I know. Maybe the kids who have always been around during the time of AIDS don’t have the reaction to condoms that we geezers have, but lets face it, having sex without a condom is more enjoyable than having sex with one. But, being the responsible people we all are condoms for the lot of us, it is.

Then comes the female condom. I get the empowerment part – the woman can take the responsibility for safe sex, especially when there’s a douchebag guy who refuses to put a helmet on that soldier. Of course, if he is such a DB, I don’t know how well he’s going to take to the “screw your hatless jimmy, I’m putting a baggie in my box” attitude, but it’s nice to know that it’s there.

My girlfriend is a sex educator. She took an 8-hour class on the female condom. So I was OK with reviewing these bad boys…what the heck, I have a highly-trained professional here even if I was going in without a perfect attitude. So what do I think?

Meh…they’re OK. Using a female condom is better than not having sex. Some are not down with the period sex, but if you use enough lube on your member it could be a good alternative to a regular condom or no sex at all. But make sure you use the lube, because if not, the FC could become like a big baggie stuck to your cock. It could happen...uh trust me. I’ll let Jenna give the female reaction to pleasure, but it definitely did not feel as much like I was in a vagina than I would with even a regular condom. But again, it’s better than watching TV.

They are more expensive than regular condoms (and thanks to a lot of non-profits you can find condoms for free in various places), so I would recommend the FC2 for anyone who has a specific reason for them, i.e. taking control of safe sex, period sex, etc. If you are just looking for something for safe sex, I’d go with the regular condom.

Book Review: Why Don't Students Like School

Why Don't Students Like School: A Cognitive Scientist Answers Questions About How the Mind Works and What It Means for the Classroom

Once again, I get a mis-titled book. This doesn’t address the concept of why students do not like school. As you will see, I’m not putting down the contents of the book, generally, but whoever is in charge of naming books needs to find another line of work.

Daniel Willingham is a cognitive scientist. The book is well written, as it’s not muddled down with a lot of technical jargon and uses real, concrete examples to prove his points. Oh, and the first 4/5ths of the book drove me crazy!

As a radical teacher who has fought (and mostly lost) for more differentiated, real-world education, a lot of Willingham’s explanations of how the brain works had me screaming at the book. At one point, I think I actually wagged my finger at the book and for some reason it didn’t change. I’m not necessarily disputing his data or conclusions, but how it relates to its intended audience. For a while, Willingham seemed to be advocating for traditional, teacher-centered education and it was driving me nuts.

Rather than give you a summary of the book chapter by chapter, here are some of the notes I took as I was reading:

“Must have background facts to be able to comprehend. (Poor kids, no books, etc = smaller vocabulary)”
“Acknowledges that facts are needed to get skills, but decries those who see schools as all rote memorization and no thinking.”
“Even with facts – depth over breadth.”
“I’m getting the impression author’s calling for linguistic learning. Don’t make learning relevant to their interests.”
“Also, knowledge is teacher-centric.”
“Special Ed kids?”
“Ch 5 – still advocating for practice/repetitive learning. ‘Why Don’t Children Like School?’”
“Advocating for study of others’ knowledge because kids can’t create their own.”
“Cognitive theory refutes multiple intelligence theory.”
“Doesn’t interest and motivation affect learning?”
“So if we teach traditionally, we will need to change culture about how we value learning.”
“Change brings attention.”
“Background knowledge is key to success in school.”
“Intelligence is malleable.”
“Intelligence is genetic and environmental, but more environmental.”
“1st step – convince students that intelligence can be improved.”
“Ch 8 – Viable suggestions about praise and failure.”
“Failure and grades.”

I read the book while trying to be accepting that cognitive theory was in conflict with my philosophy of education. But later in the book, Willingham says that just teaching to cognitive theory is NOT what he is calling for. I agree. Activities for motivation and interest are important as well and not just for content. By the end of the book, even a “cool” teacher like me was able to take away ideas and concepts that would improve my teaching.

I don’t think this book would help the novice teacher who is in over his head or the burned out teacher who just wants to hand out the worksheets and count down until retirement (though, more of the former than latter). And with most educational discussion that doesn’t focus on teaching to invalid standardized tests, there’s only so much the reflective teacher can do with the pressures from above on test scores. But the book makes an educator question his own beliefs and practices and that is always good.

A great sequel to this book would be for Willingham to teach in a public high school for a year or two then reflect on how the job relates to WDSLS. That would be fascinating. But until that comes out, teachers, grab WDSLS. You’ll knock off all 165 pages while your students are doing their worksheets.

From a May 13, 1971, conversation among President Richard Nixon, John D. Ehrlichman, and H. R. Haldeman. On October 5, 1999, the National Archives made available to the public 445 hours of previously unreleased Oval Office tapes. The following dialogue was transcribed by Chicago Tribune reporter James Warren.

RICHARD NIXON: We're going to [put] more of these little Negro bastards on the welfare rolls at $2,400 a family--let people like Pat Moynihan and [special consultant] Leonard Garment and others believe in all that crap. But I don't believe in it. Work, work--throw 'em off the rolls. That's the key.

JOHN D. EHRLICHMAN: The key is Reagan's neutrality. If Reagan blasts this thing and says it's not strong enough on the work-requirement end, that will be very bad.

NIXON: I have the greatest affection for them [blacks], but I know they're not going to make it for 500 years. They aren't. You know it, too. The Mexicans are a different cup of tea. They have a heritage. At the present time they steal, they're dishonest, but they do have some concept of family life. They don't live like a bunch of dogs, which the Negroes do live like.

EHRLICHMAN: The Mexican American is not as good as the Mexican. You go down to Mexico--they're clean, they're honest, they're moral.

NIXON: Mexico is a much more moral country.

EHRLICHMAN: Monterrey, Cuernavaca. Go into slum areas, and by God they come out with clean shirts on a Sunday morning.

NIXON: The church. You find a helluva lot less marijuana use in Mexico than the United States.

EHRLICHMAN: The unions are actually a stronger force down there than the church.

NIXON: For what?

EHRLICHMAN: For conduct and social policy.

NIXON: ... CBS ... glorifying homosexuality.

EHRLICHMAN: A panel show?

H. R. HALDEMAN: No, it's a regular show. It's on every week. It's usually just done in the guy's home. It's usually just that guy, who's a hard hat.

NIXON: That's right; he's a hard hat.

EHRLICHMAN: He always looks like a slob.

NIXON: Looks like Jackie Gleason.

HALDEMAN: He has this hippie son-in-law, and usually the general trend is to downgrade him and upgrade the son-in-law--make the square hard hat out to be bad. But a few weeks ago, they had one in which the guy, the son-in-law, wrote a letter to you, President Nixon, to raise hell about something. And the guy said, "You will not write that letter from my home!" Then said, "I'm going to write President Nixon," took off all those sloppy clothes, shaved, and went to his desk and got ready to write his letter to President Nixon. And apparently it was a good episode.

EHRLICHMAN: What's it called?

NIXON: "Archie's Guys." Archie is sitting here with his hippie son-in-law, married to the screwball daughter. The son-in-law apparently goes both ways. This guy. He's obviously queer--wears an ascot--but not offensively so. Very clever. Uses nice language. Shows pictures of his parents. And so Arch goes down to the bar. Sees his best friend, who used to play professional football. Virile, strong, this and that. Then the fairy comes into the bar.
I don't mind the homosexuality. I understand it. Nevertheless, goddamn, I don't think you glorify it on public television, homosexuality, even more than you glorify whores. We all know we have weaknesses. But, goddammit, what do you think that does to kids? You know what happened to the Greeks! Homosexuality destroyed them. Sure, Aristotle was a homo. We all know that. So was Socrates.

EHRLICHMAN: But he never had the influence television had.

NIXON: You know what happened to the Romans? The last six Roman emperors were fags. Neither in a public way. You know what happened to the popes? They were layin' the nuns; that's been goin' on for years, centuries.
But the Catholic Church went to hell three or four centuries ago. It was homosexual, and it had to be cleaned out. That's what's happened to Britain. It happened earlier to France.
Let's look at the strong societies. The Russians. Goddamn, they root 'em out. They don't let 'em around at all. I don't know what they do with them. Look at this country. You think the Russians allow dope? Homosexuality, dope, immorality, are the enemies of strong societies. That's why the Communists and left-wingers are clinging to one another. They're trying to destroy us. I know Moynihan will disagree with this, [Attorney General John] Mitchell will, and Garment will. But, goddamn, we have to stand up to this.

EHRLICHMAN: It's fatal liberality.

NIXON: Huh?

EHRLICHMAN: It's fatal liberality. And with its use on television, it has such leverage.

NIXON: You know what's happened [in northern California]?

EHRLICHMAN: San Francisco has just gone clear over.

NIXON: But it's not just the ratty part of town. The upper class in San Francisco is that way. The Bohemian Grove, which I attend from time to time--it is the most faggy goddamned thing you could ever imagine, with that San Francisco crowd. I can't shake hands with anybody from San Francisco.
- Decorators. They got to do something. But we don't have to glorify it. You know one of the reasons fashions have made women look so terrible is because the goddamned designers hate women. Designers taking it out on the women. Now they're trying to get some more sexy things coming on again.

EHRLICHMAN: Hot pants.

NIXON: Jesus Christ.
