Fight the Actual Fight

Wow.  Just a few hours into the embarrassing, but understandable Trump Administration, and people
via Boston Globe
are already melting down.  Take a breath.  Grab a beverage.  Focus, people, focus!

Folks have been going on their social media exclaiming in horror how webpages on have disappeared.  Pages on LGBT rights, climate change, etc.  George Takei posted about it, so it MUST be real.  Well, the fact that the content wasn't there anymore IS true.  What's not true that it's Trump's fault. How do I know?  I spent 3 minutes on the internet.

First I started with  There was an explanation, but because people are less and less inclined to believe what's on the internet (More on that later), I followed a couple links in the article.  There were actual explanations by the Obama Administration in OCTOBER that all of the content would be moved to a different website.  It was an Obama decision, not Trump.

This is important for a couple of reasons.

1.  We need to stay focused.  Getting people harried about something that isn't true isn't productive.  Getting people to get worked up about something that didn't happen does nothing but cause confusion and add to burn out.  There's enough actual stuff we have to focus on.

2.  Spreading false information creates less & less trust in what is posted online.  That hurts our causes, not helps.

When I posted this people got defensive, there were a couple of crappy comments (which I quickly took care of).  Looks like this is what we're in for until we get it together.  Here's what happened to Stuart.

Stuart threw the link at them that showed it was Obama's decsion.  Crickets.  Go figure.

The stuff that replaced the Obama stuff? Oh, yeah.  That's all crap.  Go get it!

And by the way, the old stuff that used to be up there?  Big effing whup.  All words.  The deeds of the Obama Administration tell a different story.  The work that needs to be done now, actually needed to be done before Trump.  Either way, hope you're ready to saddle up.

I Don't Feel the Bern Cuz the Bern Don't Feel Me

Where's Your Line?

What are the issue(s) that are deal breakers for you?  Abortion?  Affirmative Action?  Single-payer health care?

Mine's war.  Or actually, Peace.  And if you're not working for Peace you're working for war.
Jill Stein speaking at a podium
Jill Stein

So, to my knowledge, there are two candidates who are working for Peace and one of them is not Bernie Sanders.  Those 2 are Jill Stein* and Mary Scully.

(*The Greens still have their convention to choose a candidate and there are others running, but Stein's campaign is miles ahead of the others.  It's close to a lock.)

In the 2016 election, even if you vote for anyone who is a Democrat or Republican you are supporting war.  Yeah, I know about Bernie's vote against the Iraq War, but he's voted for funding for every war since.  He supports Israel's genocide, Saudi Arabia's war in Yemen, and drone warfare which kills innocent children.  He has voted for the funding for all of this.  That's not a campaign pledge, that's working for something.  There's my line.  Peace.  Bernie and all the other Democrats and Republicans have crossed it.  They will not get my vote.

You Can't Have the Perfect Candidate

No, you can't.

And when I vote for  Jill Stein, I won't be voting for the perfect candidate.  I don't agree with the Greens on banking nor the economy in general (though the Greens will be voting on a platform plank this August that I'm very excited about).  But I feel that overall the Green's platform has a more realistic and spelled out plan with the Green New Deal, reparations, renewable energy and yes, single-payer health care.  In fact, the Greens would pay for single-payer with the money saved by reducing the military budget.  See, there's that war issue again.

Quacks Like A Duck

So the argument has been made that people like me should feel the Bern because Sanders has a legitimate chance to win.  I have a problem with that on two levels.  First, I don't think he has that great of a chance to win the primary.  The Democratic Party has seen to that.  Second, after decades of being an "independent", voting with the centrist Democrats 98% of the time, he officially slid over to the corporate-owned party to run for President.  He has said that if he loses he will tell his supporters to get behind Hillary.

That tells me that if he were to win, he would be too beholden to do the things he says he will do.  Don't believe me?  Remember Candidate Obama?  He talked about single-payer, jailing bankers, closing Gitmo, and ending wars.  (Which he hasn't - don't believe the hype.)  Bernie's quack sound like Obama's quack.

We Can't Let Trump / Cruz / Rubio Win...

There's the lesser of two evils camp.  Then there's the voting doesn't make a difference camp.  I subscribe to neither.  Voting is but one tool to use for change.  Campaigns are awesome ways to bring people together to talk about issues (though they're not always used that way).  This is true nationally and locally.

But when the election is over our jobs aren't done.  We still need to be in the streets and in the media fighting to end war and corporatization.  So I don't care who wins this election because no matter who it is, I'll still be fighting.  Whether it's Trump, Clinton, Sanders or even Stein.  What are you doing after the election?

But the Supreme Court...

What is happening right now is proof that if SCOTUS is your main concern, you shouldn't give a crap about who is President.

Full Circle

So for me it all comes down to the original thought.  Where's my line?  Mine is Peace.  And when it comes to Peace, I don't feel the Bern because the Bern doesn't feel me.

Editorial: Who's to Blame for SCOTUS? Democrats

I reacted with the same amount of disgust with today’s two Supreme Court rulings as everyone else did.  Well, to be totally honest, the Harris vs. Quinn decision I have mixed feelings about.  But I’m not here to talk about the decisions per se.

Amongst the reactions was the ever-present theory that these decisions were perfect examples of how the two parties are not the same and that this is why we have to vote for a Democratic candidate for President.

I’ve been hearing this for a while now and ranks up there with the “Nader cost Gore the election” parroting that still continues to this day.  So I decided to actually take a deeper look at this Supreme Court and see if I could draw any conclusions that are similar to “that’s why we have to vote for a Democrat for President.”

We have 9 justices: Roberts, Scalia, Kennedy, Thomas, Alito, Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan.  The first 5 are the ones responsible for the decisions everyone is upset about.  So, who is responsible for the make-up of the court who could rule in such a shitty manner?  Well, let’s see…

Presidents get to nominate candidates for the Supreme Court, but it’s the Senate that has to confirm them.  So there’s an equal responsibility here.

In 2005, GW Bush nominated Chief Justice Roberts.  If you’re anything close to a humanist, you probably think Roberts is a tool.  Well, 22 Democrats voted to confirm him.  Now, if all those D’s voted against, he still would have gotten his seat, but this is an indicator that not all the hallowed Democrats were willing to stand up to this Republican President’s nomination.

Justice Alito was nominated and confirmed in 2006, again under GWB.  Only 3 Democrats voted for this guy and he was confirmed 58 – 42.  So we’ll say this went along party lines.  Well done, Democrats.

Now the fun really begins.  Justice Kennedy. Ronald Reagan nominated him with a Democratic majority in the Senate.  He was confirmed 97-0.  Whoops!

Not done yet… it’s so hard to decide which one is the whopper.

Shitlord Antonin Scalia (OK, I stole the Shitlord reference) was also nominated by Ronald Reagan and while there was a Republican majority in the Senate, he was confirmed 98-0.  Let that one sink in for a minute.  Not a single Democrat opposed this turd.

But the Pièce de résistance is Justice Pube-on-a-Coke-Can.  Remember that one?  Clarence Thomas, who was nominated by HW Bush in 1991, was confirmed 52-48.  By a Senate that had a Democratic majority.  Ten Democrats voted for him.

To recap: the Democratic Party had at least 2 chance to stop these two decisions today but chose to, instead, confirm Anthony Kennedy and Clarence Thomas when they had the majority in the Senate.  They also decided to show how much they care about women and workers by unanimously voting in Shitlord Scalia and giving 22 votes to Chief Shitlord Roberts.

Some may say this is old news, we have to think about the “now”.  Let me show you another great example of how the Democratic Party sticks to it’s principles.

As Bruce Dixon points out, Congressman John Conyers has introduced a reparations bill in the last dozen Congresses, EXCEPT, the two where Democrats have had the majority in the House.

There were two years where the Democrats held the White House, Congress and Senate and no major legislation was passed during that time.  Now, whoever wrote the Wikipedia entry for the 111th Congress may disagree, but it is my contention that very little legislation there truly affected the systemic issues our country faces.  (OK...none of them.  Bring on the ACA rationalization.)

All of this, combined with the unrestrained contributions to both parties, is why I draw the conclusion that the systemic inequality that is embedded in this country will never be touched until people are willing to abandon the two corporate parties.  Say they’re the same, say they are different.  But they’ve both been in power for a long, long time and the scraps we get when the Democrats are the figureheads are not worth it.

And it is with that last phrase that I take this opportunity to acknowledge that my perspective is one of almost every imaginable privilege there is and that it is easy for me to draw my conclusions and willingness to sacrifice because I am a white, straight, cisgender male.  I realize that my conclusions may not be relevant to some.  But I still contend that despite the crumbs people are given by the Democrats, it is still nowhere near what we deserve and that it is people of privilege who perpetuate this system - those in the 1% and many in the 99%.

Dave has his voice back and Melyssa has Scarlett!  Our newest TSBS buddy is a drum-playing hoarder who rocks.  Looks like Dave's gonna be on the hook for 10 Grow Boxes, but that's not a bad thing.  Melyssa's getting drum lessons from Scarlett.  We learn how hard it is to be a girl geek. Seriously.  Are family bonds strong enough to withstand evil empires?  Let's find out.

Dave, Melyssa and PRD are back!  PRD got fired from a bad job. Good riddance.  Somehow we start talking about old porn.  Go figure.  If there's one thing the recent murders in California should be teaching us guys is to shut the hell up.  No, really.  You need to let women talk about what they experience on a daily basis.  Shut up.

New Show - The Return of Kimmie

Download the Show Here:

It's been a while so we happily celebrate the return of Kimmie P to the show!  We actually talk a lot about the media today.  NPR needs to save money, so they cut the daily show aimed at people of color. Shocking.  Dave has an issue with a local sports hack.  And we discuss the now nationally-famous Kimberly and Beck incident.  Good riddance is the prevailing sentiment.

No one's drinking on THIS show.  That's for sure.  Melyssa adjusts to new bed sex, Dave adjusts to 20 Minute Workout.  There's something to be said for a Carnival of Curiosities... like, save some money and get there early.  Dave is getting rid of iTunes.  You should, too.  Dave got to use his action slacks this week and they're going to be in action next week too.  Why does Goodwill suck so hard?
